Fall 2011, Unique 51040

Lecture Summary, 3 November 2011

Building Complex Polyatomics: Now that we are able to draw polyatomic molecules with hybrid atomic orbitals we can make any molecule containing period 1 and 2 atoms.  The versatility of chemical bonding is most directly (and importantly) demonstrated by examining the infinite number of molecules that can be formed by the atom carbon.  This is generally the subject of organic chemistry.  Today we starting building up increasingly complex molecules.  We talked about alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and cyclic hydrocarbons.  We also began discussion organic functional groups.
