Lecture Summary, 24 March 2016

Solutions and solubility: Today we discussed the molecular mechanism of making a solution of two or more components and the structure of water around ions dissolved in solution.  The propensity of a molecule to dissolve (in our case always in water) is reported in its equilibrium constant, often called a solubility product, Ksp.  We discussed how to change the concentration of species in solution through the common ion effect and by adding acids.
